 Welcome to the Olympic Games of the Track section 

The very first modern Olympic Games opened in the first week of April 1896. Since the Greek government had been unable to fund construction of a stadium, a wealthy Greek architect, Georgios Averoff, donated one million drachmas (over $100,000) to restore the Panathenaic Stadium, originally built in 330 BCE, with white marble for the Olympic Games.

This year 2004, sees the return to the Athens for the first time since 1896.

Beijing Olympics - Dibaba wins brilliant 10000m
The Women's 10000m final at the Beijing Olympics was a simply brilliant display of distance running by Ethiopia's Tirenish Dibaba and Turkey's Elvan Abeylegesse, who both went under the magical 30 minute barrier for the distance. Dibaba prevailed in winning in a time of 29:54.66, new Olympic Record, only going to the front with 300m to go.

Marathoners Set Sights on Olympic Glory
When the world's top marathon runners take to the streets of Beijing later this month at the Olympic Games they will be competing for more than gold, silver and bronze. For the first time since the launch of the World Marathon Majors Series in 2006, the Olympic Games will be counted in the scoring.

Italy Team for Beijing Olympics
