Finnish Athletics Federation President Antti Pihlakoski said, “This is a historic day for the city of Tampere, the Finnish Athletics Federation and the country of Finland and I am very pleased that we are able to host these prestigious championships and build on the huge interest of the Helsinki 2012 European Athletics Championships.”

Hengelo and Tampere presented outstanding bids to organise the event. Both Finland and the Netherlands were looking to host the event for a second time following Turku hosting the first-ever under-23 championships in 1997 and Amsterdam hosting the event in 2001.
