Saïd Aouita becomes the first man under 13 minutes for 5000m at the Roma track meeting in 1987.
Having set a World Record earlier to break Dave Moorcraft’s record by fractions to a time of 13:00.40 in 1985, it was not expected that he would lower it to 12:58.39, especially being off the pace late into the race
The record would stand for 7 years whereas Moorcraft’s time of 13:00.41 is still a UK record some 25 years later

a brilliant and powerful show of acceleration with 200 to go
Most interesting was seeing the young Norredine Morcelli in the race, he too would become a multiple World Record holder
