Keninsa Bekele simply cantered to a sub13 win over 5000m in Hengelo
His time was a world leading 12:58.94 and his winning margin was 15 seconds, all in a day’s work for the World’s supreme distance maestro
Saïd Aouita becomes the first man under 13 minutes for 5000m at the Roma track meeting in 1987.
Having set a World Record earlier to break Dave Moorcraft’s record by fractions to a time of 13:00.40 in 1985, it was not expected that he would lower it to 12:58.39, especially being off the pace late into the race
The record would stand for 7 years whereas Moorcraft’s time of 13:00.41 is still a UK record some 25 years later
