New Zealand athletes will be in competition this weekend at the world cross country championships in Fukuoka, Japan and the Australian under 20 and under 23 championships in Adelaide.

Ashley Aitken and Bianca Lawrie are first up tomorrow (Friday) in the under 20 800m first round. Brent Newdick fresh from his fourth placing in the decathlon at the Commonwealth Games will be competing in the pole vault, 110m hurdles and long jump in the under 23 championships. A total of 35 from New Zealand will be competing at the championships.

New Zealand senior women, junior men and junior women will compete in the world cross country championships. Lucy Oliver will compete in the first event of the championships on Saturday in the junior women's 6km. Kate McIlroy, Melissa Moon, Jess Ruthe, Nina Rillstone and Mary Davies are down for the senior women's 8km long course championship on Saturday. On Sunday Hayden McLaren, Shafat Salad, Tim Hodge and Jake Robertson will race in the junior men's 8km.
