Canada Army Run 2011<\/p><\/div>\n

(Ottawa, September 18) – More than 16,000 Canadians and military personnel walked, ran, or rolled side-by-side in the fourth annual Canada Army Run, held today under clear, sunny skies in the nation\u2019s capital.\u00a0 This sold-out event also brought together thousands more to cheer on participants in the 5K and half-marathon events. <\/p>\n

\u201cI want to thank everyone involved in helping make this the biggest and best Canada Army Run yet,\u201d said the Commander of the Canadian Army, Lieutenant-General Peter Devlin. \u201cMy thanks goes out to the participants, the volunteers, the sponsors and the thousands of others who came out today to show support for the men and women of the Canadian Forces and to thank them for all they do at home and abroad. It is so very much appreciated.\u201d<\/p>\n

During the opening ceremonies at today\u2019s event, video footage from the KAF Canada Army Run, held earlier in the day at the Kandahar Air Field, Afghanistan was shown on a giant screen near the start line. The KAF run, which drew more than 700 participants from multiple nations, mirrored the Ottawa event to the extent possible.<\/p>\n

\u201cHaving a KAF Canada Army Run, particularly on the same day as the run in Ottawa, is important to Canadian Forces members here in Afghanistan,\u201d said Brigadier-General Charles Lamarre, Commander of the Mission Transition Task Force (MTTF). \u201cThere is a tangible sense of pride in the Canadian Army and our success here in Afghanistan. We are happy to be sharing that with the people who are running the event in Ottawa.\u201d<\/p>\n

Fundraising efforts from both events generated close to $100,000 for Soldier On and the Military Families Fund, with donations still coming in. This total includes a $20,750 cheque presented during the Ottawa Awards Ceremony by the Canadian Forces Leadership and Recruit School.<\/p>\n
