Music Marathon 2012

Lanzarote Music Marathon 2012

Lanzarote Music Marathon 2012

A day of sunshine, exercise and music. An epic event of immense proportions when taking in the carnival atmosphere of the event at the Music Marathon 2012.

Competition was a great deal more competitive this year when compared to last year’s race with the winner Xavi Forcadell only taking the lead at the 18km mark after tracking Jose Reboredo the entire race.

Forcadell took the title in 72:00 with Reboredo 2nd in 72:52 and Stephen Bayliss; 3rd here in the Lanzarote Ironman in May, again taking 3rd place in 74:25.

Katie North, who works at Playitis on the island of Fuerteventura, was the women’s ‘runaway’ winner leading all the way to win comfortably in a time of 92:59.

For 2nd place, Rosa Gutierrez (1:41:04) was involved in a feisty duel with Laura Trasande (1:41:25) swapping positions over the last lap of the course for the local and previous winner of the race, Gutierrez to eventually best her rival by 25 seconds.

With a 5 and 10,56km been run at the same time of  the half marathon, the 4 x 5km lap route can be seen as a chaotic scene of colour, carnival and exercise. The races are each competitive under their own terms however the main emphasis is fun and spectator involvement.

For the record the half of the half marathon was won by Victor Guadalope in 36:29 with the Women’s category won by visiting Netherland’s athlete, Marieke van Lierop, in 44:05

With the ‘kids’ races before the main event and the musicians on hand, there was enough fun, competition and excitement for all involved to have a thoroughly enjoyable day as the musicians strummed through into the dark hours.
