I can't believe that it is 7 years since I was last on the forums Ed! My goal is to increase my 10k running speed as much as possible whilst doing some biking and swimming in order to race an Olympic Triathlon in mid' Sep' 2016.It is the same triathlon as last year. Running was my best discipline, swimming second and cycling third. I have done weights over winter, particularly on the legs in order to get stronger for cycling. All of my other races this year are 10k runs with a 10 mile run in July. As I am 54 this year I want to be able to keep as strong as possible as I know that bone and muscle mass decreases with age.

I ran 46 minutes something on the 8th May but it was EXTREMELY HOT AND WINDY. I ran 44mins something a couple of weeks before that. I have another 10k race this Sunday.
I have read various threads and am aware that the hardest work is during days 3 to 8 inclusive. I have substituted some of your easy runs for cycling and swimming as can be seen below. What do you think?

DAY 5 Alternate a 1hour 30 min with a two and a half to three and a half hour bike (including hills)

DAY 10 Hard interval or tempo bike for between one and one and a half hours on the flat

DAY 11 30 TO 50 min technique swim in the pool

DAY 13 One to one and a half hour open water swim to include different speeds

DAY 16 Hard interval or tempo bike for between one and one and a half hours on the flat

DAY 18 30 TO 50 min technique swim in the pool

DAY 19 Rest

DAY 20 RACE (as they are usually all on a Sunday)

How would I fit a leg strength or bodyweight circuit in?
I will let you know my 10k race time and HR's on Sunday.
Thanks

GB & NI rising star Jade Jones (coach: Tanni Grey-Thompson/Ian Thompson) will begin her A-level exams on Monday 9 June, marking the start of a summer she hopes will see her make a major breakthrough both on and off the track.

After finishing her exams in the next two weeks, Jones hopes to make the English team for the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games and the GB & NI team for the 2014 IPC Athletics European Championships in Swansea.

The 18 year old, who is studying A-Levels in Biology, Chemistry and Law said: "I've been pushing well this year but as I've got exams coming up my focus is a little bit off training at the moment as I've got so much going on."

"But I have had a solid winter and I want to take that into Swansea and the Commonwealths, as they are my main aims this year. It's great to have so many big events in one year. It's good to get that race experience and hopefully it will be my first breakthrough."

Currently placed in the top five of the 2014 world rankings for the 800m, 1,500m and 5,000m T54 events, Jones is well aware that she might make the podium at her first European Championships, which take place at Swansea University between 18-23 August.

"It's hard to predict as it would be my first podium at a senior event. I think it would be incredible! All my family will be there to watch which will be really nice. It would be really good to do it at a home event," she said.

Despite her teenage years, Jones is something of a veteran of the circuit having competed at the London 2012 Paralympic Games and the 2011 and 2013 World Championships, events she says have given her valuable experience.

"The girls race so differently at a majors to say a Grand Prix. The tactics and everything are completely different when racing for medals," said Jones who made the finals of the 800m, 1,500m and 5,000m at last year's World Championships in Lyon, France.

"From London, the biggest learning was the crowds. I really struggled with it in my first event. My coach said to me it will be busy, full and noisy. I kind of took it with a pinch of salt as it was a Paralympic event and we'd never had that coverage.

"When I got there and they announced my name for the first event the whole stadium erupted. I had absolutely no idea what to do.

"Getting that experience and taking it onto the next event has really helped. At first I saw it as pressure but my coach told me not to see it as pressure as the people were there to support me. It took me a while to get it into my head but when I did, it was amazing to race with such support."

Swansea 2014 will be Jones' first European Championships, and is delighted at the level of support para-athletics is now receiving from the public and the media post London 2012.

"The coverage we have had since London has changed so much. I remember racing at the World Championships in New Zealand in 2011 and we were a highlights show on Channel 4 for maybe an hour a day.

"To go from that to full coverage in London was incredible and I think Channel 4 is going to do something similar for the Europeans. If we can keep it going, it will be really good."

Jones will be one of 600 athletes from 40 countries competing at the Swansea 2014 IPC Athletics European Championships.

England Athletics is pleased to announce the results of its 2014 Board Elections.

The candidates who clubs and member organisations have elected to the two positions on the England Athletics Board are Tim Soutar (Blackheath & Bromley Harriers AC) and Neil Costello (Cambridge & Coleridge AC).

Chair of England Athletics Peter King said, “I would like to congratulate Tim and Neil on their election and wish them every success in the roles that they will take on as Board of Directors. I also want to thank each of the other candidates. It has been good to see a range of candidates come forward for our clubs and member organisations to consider. These elections form an important component of the democratic process.
“This is the first time England Athletics has held Board Elections. It is essential our clubs are properly represented on the Board and these positions, in addition to the two allocated to National Council, are a vital part of ensuring our clubs are integral to the decision making processes of England Athletics.
“These Board Elections came about as a result of views expressed by clubs at our previous consultation. As this year’s Club Conferences get underway I hope that this encourages people to see the importance and value of our Consultation work.”

Chair of the England Athletics National Council Tony Shiret said, “I am really pleased that Tim and Neil are joining the Board. They clearly represent the interests of the clubs and both are known hard-workers on behalf of their clubs and the sport in their areas.
“The National Council has been leading a major effort to make the areas of the sport of greatest relevance to the members and their clubs more transparent and accountable. This is still in its early stages and the path will be long and difficult. But we welcome further independent elected Board members. To its credit the Board and its leadership has been fully behind this important move. It is also pleasing to see so many clubs voting. The sport is finding its voice and will change for the better.”

The successful candidates have both commented on their election and the work that lies ahead for them. Tim Soutar said, “Our clubs are the bedrock of our sport. We all benefit from their proper engagement in key decision-making. With our strengthened governance process, we are better placed to confront the challenges facing us. I am very grateful for the support I have received and will do my best to continue to work with everyone to ensure a secure future for our sport and its participants.”

Neil Costello said, “I’m delighted and a bit daunted by the election results. I was nominated by clubs from five counties reflecting the breadth of activities in our sport. I hope I can represent the range of interests effectively. I’m looking forward to working with the other members of the Board and to the opportunity to use my experience inside and outside athletics so that it continues to be a sport of which we can all be proud. Thank you to all the clubs that supported me.”

All clubs and organisations who were Members of England Athletics as at 30 January 2014 (closing date for candidate nominations) were entitled to vote in the election. The voting entitlements of Member clubs and organisations were as stated in the Election Regulations (see below).

The ballot was conducted by Electoral Reform Services with the full results as follows:
SOUTAR, Tim 153 265 Elected
COSTELLO, Neil 125 201 * Elected

The British Athletics TV Events team picked up the top award at the International Sports Event Management awards last night, for their work staging the Sainsbury’s Anniversary Games at the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in July.

The small in-house team, which was created 18 months ago by British Athletics Chief Executive Niels de Vos, won the Outstanding Team Contribution Award in recognition of their success in creating and delivering the three day event, one year on from the Opening Ceremony of the Olympic Games.

Created by British Athletics to capture the national mood of celebration and to reinforce athletics’ status as the number one Olympic and Paralympic sport, the Sainsbury’s Anniversary Games became the focal point for the one year celebration of the London 2012 Games.

Led by British Athletics Major Events Director, Cherry Alexander MBE, the team had just six months to deliver the event, from receiving the go ahead in January to the Anniversary weekend in July.

In that time they conceived, created and delivered every aspect of the event from securing sponsorship, creating the brand, booking the athletes, transforming the Stadium, delivering media operations through to publicising the event.

The Sainsbury’s Anniversary Games attracted sell-out crowds, with tickets for the event selling in a record time of 75 minutes – making it the fastest selling athletics event outside a major championship.

It also received the largest ever TV audience and the highest ever media profile for an athletics meet in Britain, outside of the Games as over 4.5 million people tuned in to watch some of the biggest names in athletics in action, and research from SportsWise showed that of the 180,000 fans who attended, 95% of ticket purchasers would buy a ticket for a similar event and an astonishing 23% claimed the event was “the best event they had ever been to.”

British Athletics Chief Executive Niels de Vos said:

“We are absolutely thrilled that the hard work, talent and professionalism of the British Athletics TV Events team has been recognised on the international stage at the ISEM awards.

“When I made the decision to bring the management of our televised events in house nearly 18 months ago, I was envisaging building delivery expertise for the IAAF and IPC World Championships in 2017 through elevating our Diamond League meetings and a core part of that is ensuring we have the best team in place to deliver.

“I would like to thank the team and our key partners - Sainsbury’s, The National Lottery and UK Sport - for their continued hard work, dedication and creativity which has driven these events forward. As we build towards the IAAF and IPC World Championships in 2017, I’m proud that British Athletics is now recognised as the leading athletics delivery team in the world.”

There was a second ISEM award for the Sainsbury’s Anniversary Games, as British Athletics’ digital supplier, Creative Technology Ltd picked up the Bronze award for Best Use of Event Overlay and Facilities.
