Stellenbosch (Cape Town) –The action of the 2015 IMPI Challenge will culminate at the picturesque Lievland and Warwick Wine Estates, Stellenbosch the weekend of 17 and 18 October 2015 in the form of the IMPI Challenge Cape Town #2.

Claude Eksteen and Trish Bahlmann claimed victory in the IMPI Elite Race Cape Town #1 earlier this year in respective times of 01 hour 37 minutes 15 seconds and 02 hours 05 minutes 01 second, with Eksteen celebrating his sixth IMPI Elite Race victory on the day.

Having gone up against top South African trail runner AJ Calitz, Eksteen had the following to say: “I’ve never pushed so hard in an IMPI Race. The competition definitely made it more exciting. Racing against the top guys just gives the win more credibility”.

According to Bahlmann, the Cape Town route is tougher than the Gauteng route. “IMPI Cape Townrocks! I love the challenge, the enjoyment and the prize money. I wouldn’t miss this for the world”.

Presented by Mitsubishi Motors, the IMPI Challenge is ultimately a trail run with a twist. Obstacles are challenging, yet safe making IMPI ideal for entrants of all ages.

There are five categories to choose from when entering the IMPI Challenge:

Categories:	IMPI Challenge: 10 km with 18 obstacles (age 18+ years)
IMPI Dash: 5 km with 12 obstacles (ages 10+, all adults welcome)
IMPI Mini: 1km with smaller supervised obstacles (ages 6 – 10 years)
IMPI Corporate: the 10km Challenge distance with extra benefits (age 18+ years)

Day 3 is boulder day on the Richtersveld Wildrunâ„¢ and there were some excited, though anxious, faces this morning as we set off on the third day of this epic adventure across the Richtersveld desert.

This day, for many their favourite day of the run, lived up to all expectations and provided not only astounding views but also more quality running. Thabang Madiba carried on where he left off on the first two days to claim the 34km stage win in a time of 3:24:03. He made quite a few navigational errors and got to the official checkpoint approximately five minutes ahead of Dayle Wheeler and Katya Soggot before pulling away again down Pypkloof. This was not the end of his navigational woes though and in the final stretch he once again made a few errors before arriving at the finish on the banks of the Orange River seven minutes ahead of second place.

Wheeler and Soggot ran the last 15km together and came home in second place in a time of 3:32:31 – Soggot taking her third straight first place in the ladies race. The third man home was Filippo Faralla in a time of 4:04:10, with Nikki Kimball claiming second spot in the ladies race in 3:49:10 and Karoline Hanks being the third lady home in 4:04:10. Georgina Ayre tried her best to eradicate Hanks’ overall lead but for the second day in a row she made navigational errors that cost her dearly and possibly cost her a podium position.

Both Soggot and Madiba are on track to claim a whitewash by winning every stage of the race, but only time will tell where they will end up and with navigation playing a big part in this event, anything can happen.

The final day tomorrow will take runners down from the Orange River, over Akkedis Pass and Halfmens Ridge before they descend back to Sendelingsdrif where they started four days ago. It is possibly the toughest day of the race and is looming large ahead of everyone in camp. The great weather and perfect camp setting have made up for this though and the spirits are high as the smell of braaivleis fill the air next to the Orange River.

Day 2 of the Richtersveld Wildrun™ took place in freezing conditions as runners made their way across approximately 35km of mountainous desert terrain through driving rain and wind. It was no ordinary day in the desert and the double rainbow that greeted runners at the start of the day’s running was indication of just how extraordinary this kind of weather is in this part of the world.

Double Olympian gold medallist, James Cracknell arrived early on Wednesday morning from the United Kingdom after being delayed due to previous commentating commitments in Poland. He did not have much time to recover from his travels though as he was off and running an hour after his arrival, joining Thabang Madiba, Dayle Wheeler, Katya Soggot and Nikki Kimball in the final batch start of the day.

Madiba took off like a rocket and after five kilometres he had already opened up a three minute lead on his closest rivals. At the first official checkpoint he had overtaken all the runners who started ahead of him and he sped off on a mission to the finish. If not for the slight route change because of the change of campsite due to inclement weather, his finish time of 3:14:03 could well have been faster than Bernard Rukadza’s time at the same stage in 2014.

The second male and first two females crossed the finish line approximately 11 minutes later when Dayle Wheeler, Katya Soggot and Nikki Kimball crossed the line hand-in-hand in 3:33:35 with James Cracknell coming home not long after in a time of 3:41:56. Karoline Hanks was third lady home in a time of 4:03:23.

(Cape Town, 3 December 2014) Online entries for the 2015 Old Mutual Two Oceans Trail Run will open at 10h00 on Thursday, 4 December 2014.

This event was introduced to the line-up of Easter Weekend events - hosted under the Old Mutual Two Oceans Marathon umbrella - in 2010, and has enjoyed tremendous popularity and success, with entries for the 2014 event selling out in minutes.

Runners can choose between the 10km route – a perfect first-time race for trail novices – and the 22km run that caters for more experienced runners. The entry limit for the 2015 event has been increased to 1 000 participants in total.

Both runs start at the University of Cape Town (UCT), from where athletes will access the lower slopes of Devil’s Peak and nearby forests of the Table Mountain National Park.

The routes comprise varied terrain with steep ascents and descents, and offer a challenge to both beginner and seasoned runners. In return, participants are richly rewarded with spectacular scenery and amazing views of the Cape Peninsula.

How to enter

Runners hoping to secure an entry are encouraged to update their personal profile, complete the medical questionnaire and create an entry at http://www.twooceansmarathon.org.za by 3 December 2014.
They can then log in again at 10h00 on 4 December to finalise their payment.

Entries will be allocated on a first come first served basis. Runners who update their personal profiles & create their entry by 3 December are not guaranteed an entry, and will still be required to access the entry system when entries open at 10h00 on 4 December 2014 to pay.

The “pre-entry” procedure is in place to facilitate a faster channelling of entrants through the entry system.

Runners are also reminded of the one-time PIN (OTP) that will be sent to them from their banks before they are able to finalise their payment.

“We recently had to make a number of changes to our online entry system to align ourselves with South African banks’ increased safety measures to counteract the rise in internet fraud. One of the measures in place is to send a one-time PIN to the credit card holder,” says Carol Vosloo, General Manager of the Two Oceans Marathon NPC.

“Runners who experience a delay in receiving their OTP should contact their credit card merchant, as this verification process takes place outside of the Two Oceans Marathon entry system,” Vosloo adds.

The weather finally played along for a picture perfect day as trail runners from KZN came out to play at iSithumba for the final race of the 2014 Spur KZN Trail Seriesâ„¢.

This year’s Series made for some exciting competition on the trails and almost all of the categories were still up for grabs as runners lined up for the start on Sunday morning.

In the men’s 11.3km long course Championship race Muzi Madikwa claimed victory on the day with a quality time of 46:50 but this wasn’t enough to keep Ayanda Mlotshwa from taking the Series with two first places out of a possible four.

In the ladies Championship race it was Melanie Kelly who bumped herself up to second overall in the ladies Open Championship Series, by winning race 4 in a time of 01:06:57. However, Yolande Visser had done enough in the first three races to seal her overall victory in the ladies Open Championship with two second places and a first place at race 3.

Owen Bengo made it three wins on the trot as he blitzed the 5.1km short course Challenge race in a superb time of 20:20 to stamp his authority and cap off a fine two weeks of racing. Godfrey Madikwa chased hard in all the races but could not keep up with the flying Bengo and had to be satisfied with second place on the day and in the overall Series.

In the ladies short course Challenge race, Sabrina Ward claimed victory by navigating around the course in 26:12 to seal the overall Series win in the process, with the young Tate Steward showing great consistency to finish second overall on the day in a time of 28:27.

It was a great way to cap off a super Series and we look forward to visiting KZN again next year!
The second race of the Spur KZN Trail Seriesâ„¢ stuck to the tradition of being a wet affair as the rains came down at the magnificent Kenneth Stainbank Nature Reserve on Wednesday evening.

This race saw the short course Challenge runners traverse a loop of 5.3km with the long course Championship runners having a crack at two loops taking their distance to 10.6km. Adding to this adventure is the fact that this was of course a night run!

In the men’s long course, Ayanda Mlotshwa from Montrose cruised home in a time of 47:17 while Christine Whitfield from Durban North put in a dominant display to take first place in a time of 01:05:53.

In the short course Challenge race, Montrose resident Owen Bengo upped his game to take the win in a time of 26:13. Sabrina Ward won the ladies’ race with a good time of 32:44 with young Tate Steward continuing to impress as she took second place with her time of 33:19.

Taking place at the picturesque Lievland Wine Estate (Stellenbosch) the weekend of 18 and 19 October 2014, the IMPI Challenge Cape Town #2 has attracted the attention of South Africa’s best trail runners and multi-sport athletes.

Top sports men and women that will be vying for the title of Ultimate Champion will include: Claude Eksteen, Stuart Marais, Andre Calitz, Carla Van Huyssteen, Eddie Lambert, Charl Souma, Christiaan Greyling and Matthew Daneel.

“I love the IMPI Cape Town course,” says reigning IMPI Elite Race Cape Town champion, Claude Eksteen. “The run route is definitely IMPI Cape Town’s unique feature. It is a great off road course with a lot of climbing, which I really enjoy. The vibe is always amazing. The event is family orientated, which makes for a great day out”.

“My goal at every event is to have a smooth problem free race,” continues Eksteen. “I know my form is good so if everything falls into place then the result will be good. I’ve heard that some quality athletes will be competing in Cape Town. I have never been one to be concerned about who is on the start line. I like to focus on myself and what I am doing. I know my shape is good and if that means a good result on the day then that is great. There are always quality athletes gunning for the win”.

Top trail runner and XTERRA athlete, Stuart Marais will make his IMPI Elite Race debut in Cape Town. According to Marais, the IMPI Elite Race looks like a massive challenge. “I’ve heard so many positive reviews. I know that there will be mud, high walls and lots of ropes, that sounds tough to me. I’m looking forward to challenging myself to the obstacles and then enjoying the IMPI vibe at the finish. Other than being able to run pretty well, I don't believe I have any other strength to fall back on. We will just have to see on race day”.

Awesome Prize: The first Elite male and female competitor to cross the finish line having successfully completed all obstacles will go home with a whopping prize of R10 000.00 each.

The Spur Gauteng Winter Trail Seriesâ„¢ carried on in style as race 2 provided more top notch running on the banks of the magnificent Hennops River. Though temperatures were a little more forgiving than they were at the first race of the Series, it was still an icy morning but Gauteng trail runners came in their droves nonetheless.

After an exciting race 1 last week, the ante was raised with the addition of the 20km XL race in addition to a 12km Long Course Championship race and a 6.5km Short Course race.

In the XL race, it was 25-year-old, Cornel van Heerden who took the spoils by dominating the race to win by over 7 minutes while Nicolette Griffioen romped home in equally dominating fashion to take the win in a time of 02:00:55.

Edwin Sesipi continued where he left off last week and secured his second straight win in the Long Course Championship, winning in a time of 55:52 – more than 10 minutes ahead of his closest competition! The ladies Long Course Championship made for some close competition but Anita O'Brien managed to pip Takalani Ndudani to the finish line. She finished in 01:14:55, just over a minute ahead of Takalani.

In the Men’s Short Course Challenge Race Ryan Mathaba once again proved to have too much in the tank and ran home in a time of 00:29:53 while Penny Taylor retained top spot on the podium in a time of 00:35:39.

The next race of the Series at Segwati has already sold out and promises to bring more excitement as Series leaders can wrap up their wins there. A big thanks to all of you who ran and big thanks to our sponsors, Spur Steak Ranches, adidas, BOS Ice Tea and Protea Hotels for their amazing support and energy.

Another big name in trail lines up to tackle the Richtersveld Wildrunâ„¢

Another top South African trail runner, Tracy Zunckel, has signed up to take on the inaugural 150km, four day Richtersveld Wildrun™, and in doing so has turned the heat up on the woman’s race.

Zunckel, ladies winner at the 2013 SA Ultra Trail Championships, Lesotho Ultra Trail and the Giant’s Cup, will be taking on the four-day, 150km race through the majestic mountain desert of the/Ai/Ais-Richtersveld Transfrontier Park from 04 to 07 June 2014. Her biggest competition is likely to come from arguably the biggest name in women’s trail running in South Africa - Katya Soggot.

Katya has been on fire of late, setting records in the Bat Run and the extremely tough Helderberg Mountain Challenge. Katya is particularly at home in rough, technical mountain terrain and so the landscape at Richtersveld is right up her alley. Tracy, however, hails from the big mountain running area of the Drakensberg. Those big climbs, long distances and higher altitudes will certainly come in handy in her quest for glory.

“We are really looking forward to watching this epic battle unfold. We know Katya well from her exploits in the Cape and she is a tough competitor” said Owen Middleton, Managing Director of the events company Wildrunner, “Tracy on the other hand has proven her mettle in the ultra-distance so might arguably fare better over the four days – next week will reveal all!”

In the men’s race its Zimbabwean born trail legend Bernard Rukadza against American endurance specialist Matt Hart. “We invited Matt out to the Richtersveld Wildrun™ as one of America’s leading running journalists, only to find out the man has seen the podium on a number of ultra-distance races in America!” said Owen.

One thing is for sure though; having the racing this hot in both the men’s and ladies competition at the inaugural Richtersveld Wildrun™ will almost certainly set the bar very high for years to come.

The 150km race starts in the remote Northern Cape border town of Sendelingsdrif on the 4th June at 08h00.
