Good news for runners who failed to secure an entry into the 2015 Old Mutual Two Oceans Marathon, is that the substitution entry window is open between 23 January and 4 March 2015.

The substitution entry process provides runners who can no longer participate, the opportunity to “hand over” their entry to another runner.

This is an especially valuable tool for those runners who missed out on entering but still hope to make it to the Half Marathon or Trail Run start line.

According to Carol Vosloo, General Manager of the Two Oceans Marathon NPC, substitution entries provide an important logistical function that contributes to athletes’ safety on race day.

“Runners withdraw for a number of reasons, but it’s not just a small matter of handing your race number over to a friend. Each runner’s personal profile - which includes important medical and emergency information - is linked to his/her race number, and the substitution process facilitates the linking of a newly-issued number to the new participant.”

Vosloo adds that not following the proper substitution procedure could have life-threatening consequences, as emergency personnel rely on the accuracy of the information linked to an athlete’s race number.

“We are responsible for the safety of over 27 000 runners, and urge all athletes to not only follow the proper procedures, but to also take responsibility for the accuracy of their personal, emergency and medical information.”

The substitution entry process

The withdrawing runner must log into the online system and click on the “substitute” button. A voucher number will be displayed and an email containing this voucher number will be dispatched.

This voucher number plus your race number must be forwarded to the new runner who intends to take your entry.

The withdrawing runner ONLY gives up his/her entry. The RaceTec Chip and extra purchases must still be collected by the runner.

The original entry fee is not refundable.

The new runner must take the voucher number, log into the online entry system and click “Substitution”. The withdrawing runner’s original race number must also be captured.

Once the substitution has been validated, the system will prompt the new runner for personal and medical information (if this hasn’t already been completed).

The cost for a substitution entry is R80. However, other costs may still apply, like the cost of a compulsory RaceTec Chip (if the new runner doesn’t already have one), a temporary licence fee, etc.[/LIST]

Substitution entries for the Ultra Marathon will only become active, once entries for the event fill up. There are currently just over 1 500 entries available.

Online entries for the 2015 Old Mutual Two Oceans Half Marathon opened to a massive online demand at 10 am on 19 November and closed within 2 hours 15 minutes.

Runners still hoping to participate in the Half Marathon on 4 April 2015 can run for a good cause by entering through a charity from 25 November 2014, while substitution entries will open on 23 January 2015.

Entries for the Ultra Marathon are still open. Entries for the 10km & 22km Trail Runs open at 10 am on 4 December 2014.

Positive response to online queueing system

Due to the massive demand for Half Marathon entries, the organisers had an online queueing system in place to funnel prospective entrants into the online entry portal.

According to Carol Vosloo, General Manager of the Two Oceans Marathon NPC, there were 11 000 runners waiting in the online queue by the time entries had opened at 10 am.

“By the time we had to close entries, there were still roughly 6 000 people in the queue. While it is exciting for us to have such a great demand for entries for the world’s most beautiful Half Marathon, it is still sad to have to leave behind those who weren’t able to secure their entry before everything was snapped up.”

Vosloo added that, while the overwhelming response to the online queueing system and the manner in which runners were able to enter was positive, there were runners who experienced payment issues.

“We had to make a number of changes to our online entry system to align ourselves with South African banks’ increased safety measures to counteract the rise in internet fraud. One of the measures in place was to send a one-time PIN to the credit card holder. However, due to a delay in confirmation from certain banks to their card holders, some runners were unable to finalise their entries."

The best of Durban will be the view in the upcoming SPAR Women’s 10/5km race with the new race route taking runners along the new look beachfront and Green Hub precinct.

The field of 17,500 ladies will start in Masabalala Yengwa Avenue, just across the road from Durmail, heading north. The majority of the 10km race is on the beachfront with a scenic loop taking them through the Blue Lagoon area. Snell Parade will be the stomping ground for the run north as they wind their way to the Kingfisher Canoe Club before making their way past the Dusi Canoe Marathon finish and along the promenade back towards the city and the finish at Sahara Stadium.

“It is difficult to pinpoint the most scenic spot this year; there are several parts of the race that are absolutely spectacular. The route is mostly flat with a couple of occasions the ladies are going to have to gear down.”

Some interesting statistics on the route include its start at 5m above sea level and finish at 3m. The lowest point is at 1 metre above sea level at Blue Lagoon (approx. 4.8km) with the biggest climb from 4m to 9m. The maximum slope is 9.1% and -9.0% with the averages at 1.2% and -1.1%. If you really want the tough details, the elevation gain is 66.2m and loss is -67.7m

For the shorter distance, the 5km athletes will also start alongside Durmail heading north. Their route will have them turning right just beyond the Suncoast parking lot and double back under the M4 underpass where they converge with the 10km route.

“Curving along the promenade with the cityscape in front of you and the ocean to your left, aren’t the ladies privileged to have this landscape as part of the run. Channelling through the M4 underpass to be greeted by the iconic Moses Mabhida Stadium with the palm tree avenue taking you out to Masabalala Yengwa Avenue certainly adds to the wow factor.” Race Director, Brad Glasspoole enthused.

At the race launch last week, Glasspoole introduced a virtual run-through of the route allowing the field to actually see where they will be running this year.

“Not many races have a video clip of the entire route. This is a great tool for all involved! For the top runners they get to see the challenges that lie in wait, where the gradual hills are and the line they can run to minimise time. For the rest of the ladies, they get to see what is in store for them and a way to brag about their achievement.”

Top South African U23 Mountain Bike cross country cyclist, Ashleigh Moffatt from Time Freight VELOlife cycled the route mounted with a camera to capture the scenes for the YouTube clip. “I loved cycling the route; it is fast and pretty. I have to admit that I am in awe of the top runners being able to clock 30 odd minutes for the distance.” The volunteer camera lady stated.

MD for SPAR KZN, Rob Philipson stated, “I love the fact that we launched the YouTube video so you can get a feel of what you are about to take on. Technology is fantastic and it makes sense that we use it to the fullest!”

Potential athletes have two options of entering, online at http://www.sparwomensrace.co.za or manually at the race registration at Suncoast on 21, 22 or 23 August.

After winning two IMPI Elite Race titles in Gauteng, KZN based multisport athlete Claude Eksteen is ready to expand his horizons by taking on his very first IMPI Elite Race in Cape Town on Saturday, 05 April 2014.

Taking place at the picturesque Lievland Wine Estate and Wiesenhof Legacy Park (Stellenbosch) on Saturday, 05 and Sunday, 06 April 2014 there are four structures to choose from when entering the IMPI Challenge Cape Town: a Traditional IMPI Challenge, IMPI Dash, IMPI Elite and of course a fun filled IMPI Mini.

“I’ve competed at the last three IMPI Elite Races at the Van Gaalens Cheese Farm, Hartebeespoort, in the North West Province,” said Eksteen. “I’ve always wanted to take part in the Cape Town event and now I have the opportunity to do just that. I am looking forward to experiencing a new venue and some new competition. When it comes to obstacle course racing you can’t be too concerned about your competition. You need to focus on yourself, the course, the obstacles ahead of you and getting through them as quickly as possible. I have never been one to look at start lists and other competitors, as I prefer not to focus on the people, but rather to focus on what needs to be done”.

“If you don’t prepare and train for an IMPI event especially the IMPI Elite Race everything will seem challenging,” continues Eksteen. “Learning to transition from trail running to overcoming obstacles is very important. I train six days a week. My training schedule consists of a balance of running, strength training and obstacle course training. My goal at the IMPI Challenge Cape Town will be to have a problem free event. If I can do that, then the results will follow. I encourage people to take on the IMPI Challenge because it is an awesome excuse to get wet and muddy with friends, while acting like kids again. It is a great opportunity to start exercising out in nature, while forgetting about life stresses”.

Currently just under 3000 adventure addicts and lovers of the outdoors have entered the IMPI Challenge Cape Town. Event Organisers expect this amount to increase to 3500 before the start of the weekend, making the 2014 IMPI Challenge Cape Town the largest IMPI Event to date.

“In addition to this exciting news, we are also happy to announce that prize money will be awarded to the top twenty finishers in both the men’s and women’s individual races. The Totalsports XTERRA SA Championships in Grabouw has grown to be the largest XTERRA in the world, with 3000 warriors expected to partake over the weekend. As part of our vision of growing the sport in South Africa, we would like the Totalsports XTERRA Grabouw to be a favourite race for pro XTERRA athletes in the global tour. We strongly believe that with a healthy prize purse the event will grow even more in both numbers and in stature”.

“XTERRA South Africa is extremely proud to have some of the world’s best athletes as part of our XTERRA family,” continues Collins. “Increasing the prize purse is also our way of saying thank you to all warriors for their support, while encouraging more XTERRA warriors to reach the top. We believe that the increased prize purse will also attract a larger field of international XTERRA warriors, which in turn just might encourage the weekend warrior to come along and be a part of the fantastic XTERRA vibe. Having a highly competitive field is also great news for spectators and we hope that more people will come out with their families to be a part of the event. The team has put a lot of effort into raising the bar even higher than before. With new sponsors such as Fedhealth and Specialized coming on board, XTERRA warriors can look forward to an unbelievable race day experience with entertainment, chill areas, spectator areas, vendors, exhibitors and more”.

Taking the form of the South African Championship, the TOTALSPORTS XTERRA Grabouw presented by REHIDRAT® SPORT forms part of the XTERRA World Tour. Athletes competing at this event stand the chance to qualify for the world championship final in Hawaii later in the year.

A record field of close to 18 500 participants will line up outside the Cape Town Stadium on Sunday 13 October to take part in this year’s OUTsurance 94.5 Kfm Gun Run. The half marathon and 10km have attracted fields of 7 130 and 7 490 respectively, while the 5km has just over 2 850 pre-entries.

“We are thrilled that this race just keeps on growing and that it has attracted yet another record field. As of Monday the entry count was sitting at 17 200, with some entries still to be processed, and we are expecting over 1 000 people to enter the 5km on race day,” said Atlantic Athletic Club’s race director Tony Breslin.

5km entries will be taken at the various number collection points and on the morning of the race from the start in Fritz Sonnenberg Road. Participants in the 21km half marathon and 10km run/walk must collect their race numbers from the collection point they chose when they entered.

These points are at Sportsmans Warehouse in Rondebosch, Tygervalley, Tokai, West Coast and at Canal Walk and Somerset Mall, as well as at Hamiltons Rugby Club in Green Point and are open on Friday 11 and Saturday 12 October. Substitutions, upgrades and downgrades will also be done at registration for a fee of R20. No upgrades from the 5km will be allowed.

Participants are also encouraged to visit the website thegunrun.co.za, which will provide them with information on where to park, route maps and general race details to ensure they have a great race experience. Contact Top Events on 021-511 7130 for all the details.

The City of Cape Town will be providing My CiTi buses for the event and runners are encouraged to park at the Grand Parade and catch the bus to the start. Buses from outside the finish will take participants back to their cars after the event. The buses will run from 5:30am through until 12pm and are free to all participants.

The half marathon starts at 07h00, the 10km at 08h00 and the 5km at 09h00 and the Cape Field Artillery will provide the gun, which councillor Grant Pascoe will fire to start the half marathon. Ward councillor for the Atlantic Seaboard, Beverley Schafer will be at the finish to fire the cut-off gun at 10h30. The regiment and firing of the gun have been an integral part of the event since 2003. Traditionally the event started at 09h00 and runners had to finish the event before the noonday gun was fired from Signal Hill.

Formed in 1857, the Cape Field Artillery is the oldest operational volunteer artillery regiment in the British Commonwealth. The regiment has a close relationship with the City and fires the 21-gun salute at the opening of Parliament.

There are some great lucky draw prizes up for grabs, including a cheque for R20 000 and a flat screen TV, plus loads of entertainment at the finish courtesy of Kfm, who will be broadcasting live from the finish.

The entry deadline for this year’s OUTsurance 94.5 Kfm Gun Run half marathon and 10km is just over a week away and participants wanting to take part in the half marathon and 10km run have until Sunday 29 September to enter, as no late entries will be taken after this date.

This popular event takes place on Sunday 13 October and judging by the entries received to date, there’s every indication another record field will line up on race day. Last year the event hosted just over 15 500 participants.

There’s a choice of a 21.1km half marathon, 10km run/walk or a 5km fun run/walk, specifically aimed at families, younger participants and walkers. Entries for the 5km only will be taken on race day at a marquee right near the start line.

This year’s event will start outside the Cape Town Stadium in Fritz Sonnenberg Road and finish along the Sea Point Promenade near Rocklands Beach. The 21km starts at 07h00, the 10km at 08h00 and the 5km at 09h00.

Cut off is at 10h30 so participants have more than enough time to complete their event, particularly the half marathon. The Cape Field Artillery is a major attraction and integral part of the event and will fire the gun to start the half marathon and again to mark the cut-off.

Participants can enter online at thegunrun.co.za or pick up an entry form from any Sportsmans Warehouse, where entries will also be taken in store. Contact Top Events on 021-511 7130 or info @ topevents.co.za.
The Anna Foundation is the official beneficiary for the event and all funds raised will go towards helping them with their cause. The Foundation is a non-profit organisation working with children who live on farms and in rural areas of the Western Cape. Their mission is to support rural communities through its education, sports and life development programmes. 1500 places still open for manual entries
Days away from this year’s running of the SPAR Women’s 10/5km Race in Pietermaritzburg, the list of confirmed entries is hotting up.

Defending champion, Poppy Mlambo is hoping to beat her time of 35.38 that she ran last year. Mlambo has been crowned champion three times in the last four years, missing out in 2011 due to injury. KwaZulu Natal’s Jenna Challenor stepped up that year, doing her province proud claiming victory. Challenor will be taking to the roads this Sunday after coming fifth in Pretoria’s SPAR Women’s 10km race on last Saturday.

Olympic marathon runner, Tanith Maxwell joins the elite runners after her run in Moscow at the 2013 ISAF World Championships. Running personality, Grace De Oliveira has also confirmed her entry and will lead the charge in her age group. Local young running sensation, Klara Hartmann, together with her younger sister, Natascha will be leading the junior categories.

The new course promises to be more spacious and has no cross-overs between the 2 distances. With the prize money sitting at a respectable R8,000 for first place in the Open category, the race looks to be highly competitive.

While online entries have now closed, there are still 1500 places for manual entries which will be taken at The Oval Cricket Ground on Friday 6 September from 10:00am to 05:00pm and Saturday 7 September from 10:00am to 03:00pm. No entries will be taken on race day.
