Today the European Triathlon Union (ETU) and Challenge Family announced Challenge Almere-Amsterdam will host the 2014 ETU European Championship Long Distance Triathlon Championships. Almere, is Europe's oldest long distance race and hosted the first European Championships in 1985, and again in 1991,1999 and 2006.

Challenge Almere-Amsterdam is the third Challenge Family race to host the long distance championships, sharing the honour with DATEV Challenge Roth and Challenge Vichy since the partnership between ETU and Challenge Family began in 2012.

“The Challenge Almere organizing committee is very pleased to be part of this legacy”, said race director Richard Belderok. “It is our goal to attract a significant number of athletes to this historic event from all over the world, as well as of course reaching the international media.”

Flevoland Deputy King’s Commissioner Jaap Lodders is enthusiastic about the announcement. “The European Championships at Challenge Almere-Amsterdam are a great boost for the event.
“The triathlon is in the DNA of our community. Hundreds of volunteers have put the triathlon in Almere back on the international sports map. The success lies in acting as a family: together with volunteers, companies, sport clubs, local government and sponsors we made a big improvement with our event by working with the Challenge Family.
A week on from a breathtaking World Triathlon Series finale in London, the development of triathlon across Europe continues at pace in Kladovo, Serbia for the Balkan Championships.

As part of the ETU’s commitment to supporting developing National Federations and their athletes, this competition is now in its third year as a standalone event following four years as an ITU European Cup and Balkan Championships competition.

Last year in Elazig, Turkey’s Ece Bakici won her country’s first International triathlon medal and athletes from the likes of Romania, Lithuania and Macedonia will be hoping for a similar success story in Kladovo.

In total, 50 elite athletes will compete in Kladovo with many representing their country for the first time and making their International competition debut.

A strong Serbian contingent will be keen to do well on home soil and Ljudmila Medan, Team Manager for the Serbian Triathlon Union, said: “It is a special honour to be the organisers of the Balkan Championships and to welcome all the participants.

“Since becoming an Olympic sport, triathlon in Serbia began to expand rapidly. We started as a group of enthusiasts and fans of endurance sports, but now we have developed into a serious National Triathlon association with over 400 licensed triathletes.

“The Balkan Championship are crucial as they bring together national associations who need to know each other, to help them identify problems in the organisation of competitions and to educate coaches and improve the quality of competitors in the elite category.”

Peter Klosz, of the Romanian Triathlon Federation, said: “For us the Balkan Championships events is one of the most important races of the year. We are taking 16 athletes to Kladovo across the youth, junior and elite categories.

“This is special for our athletes to give them experience in international races. I hope in a couple years we can go on to get some good results in the higher international races.”

One of the biggest and most challenging Triathlon competitions takes place this weekend in Strobl am Wolfgangsee for the ETU European Cross Triathlon Championships.

The diversity of triathlon is once again on display as over 150 athletes will compete for the European Cross title across Elite, U23, Junior, Paratriathlon and Age Group categories.

The first ETU Cross Triathlon European Championships took place in Ibiza in 2007 with Eneko Llanos (ESP) and Carina Wasle (AUT) the inaugural winners.

Since then, the popularity of the sport and the competition has continued to grow. Cornelia Schierl, of the LOC behind the European Cross Triathlon Championships, said: "There is a triathlon-boom going on in Austria, regarding the classic disciplines as well as the cross-triathlon. The community is growing constantly. Our region is literally a haven for mountain bikers, which offers the perfect circumstances for cross-triathletes."

Following the stunning course at Kitzbühel in the World Triathlon Series, the Cross triathletes can look forward to a spectacular and demanding course which covers 1km swim, 22km mountain bike and 6km run.

Schierl said: “We wanted to represent the various landscape of Austria and the Salzkammergut-Region in particular. The international athletes should get an idea of the huge potential and the unique facilities our region provides for training and races. We want to inspire them to come back for training and for the annual Wolfgangsee X-Challenge.

“It was a challenge for us to create a 11 km course which heads from the lakeside into the nature and shows the variety of the landscape for mountainbikers. In the end we made it and we're proud to say that the course is very diversified. The Cross triathletes will go on a great course that will demand all their skills, especially on the difficult downhill part with spectacular panoramic views during the race."

In the Elite Women’s race, Helena Erbenova (CZE), the 2013 ITU World Cross Triathlon Champion and 2013 World Winter Triathlon Champion, will look to add another title to her collection by defending the title she won in Den Haag last year.

Two time European Cross Champion Carina Wasle (AUT) also returns, looking to avenge last year’s defeat to Erbenova when she finished second in den Haag.

Germany’s Kathrin Muller, a previous European Cup winner, make her debut in International Cross Triathlon competition.

In the Elite Men’s race, two time winner and defending Champion Victor Manuel Del Corral Morales will not compete, opening up the field for a new Champion.

Among the contenders, Tomas Jurkovic (SVK) finished 6th in the ITU World Cross Triathlon Championships but both Peter Mosny (SVK) and Rory Downie (GBR) are U23 European Cross Triathlon Champions – Downie’s victory coming last year in Den Haag.

As the penultimate race of the 2013 World Triathlon Series it’s not surprising that the stars will turn out in Stockholm this weekend. Both the men’s and women’s fields boast almost every athlete that is still within reach of claiming the 2013 WTS series titles and more who could still claim a place on the podium. Click here to view the current rankings. This year Stockholm is a full Olympic distance race, after it debuted on the circuit in 2012 with a sprint distance.

Elite Men’s Preview
With a stellar line-up that includes Alistair Brownlee, Jonathan Brownlee, Javier Gomez, Richard Murray and Sven Riederer, the elite men’s race promises to be one of the most hotly events contested all season. And when you then consider it’s the penultimate race in a fascinating 2013 World Triathlon Series season where the race for rankings points will loom almost as large as the race outcome, it’s must-watch action.

So far the 2013 season has been a rarity in that due to a late start to the season, neither Alistair Brownlee or Jonathan Brownlee has taken a lead in the overall rankings. Instead it’s been Gomez, Mario Mola and Joao Silva who have taken turns in the lead with super-consistent performances across the early part of the season, while Murray has also figured in the top-four to sit third in the rankings. The Brownlee brothers currently sit in fifth and sixth, with almost 600 points needed to overtake current leader Gomez. It is plenty to make up, with but extra points on offer in the London Grand Final, it’s still within reach. However don’t expect all those above them to be giving up their lead lightly, and Gomez is currently in the box seat to claim his third ITU World Championship.

But what does it mean for Stockholm? Well firstly doing well on the technical bike course, that comes complete with cobblestones in the old Gamla Stan area of Stockholm, could be key. As has been the case most of the season expect the Brownlees, Gomez and Riederer to be in a lead bunch and push the pace, and don’t be surprised if others like Alessandro Fabian, Ryan Sissons and Henri Schoeman are there with them. If they are close off the bike, the run will suit the likes of Murray, Laurent Vidal and Vincent Luis - who claimed his first WTS podium in the sprint event here last year.

And what about the chances of back to back Brownlee, Brownlee and Gomez podiums? So far in their ITU careers, the Brownlees and Gomez have raced against each other 13 times. Out of that 13, they have shared the podium four times. That doesn’t seem that foreboding until you unpick that those four came from the past five races they all hit the startline, across the past three years. The last two races that happened were a year apart, the London 2012 Olympic Games and the Hamburg sprint event this year. While the podium spots were slightly switched up in that time, it was still those three on top. It’s also key to note that this year, no-one else but those three has actually won a WTS race.

All eyes will be on Penza this weekend as the City hosts the only International Triathlon race in Russia with a double header of ITU European Cup and ETU Junior Cup.

Now in its third year, the event has continued to grow from strength to strength, bringing the cream of Russian athletes together and now, more and more International athletes are participating.

The President of the Russian Triathlon federation, Sergey Bystrov, is delighted with the progress of the event and has big plans for the future of Triathlon races in Russia.

“The first time Penza held the ITU Triathlon Cup was in 2011 and already in the next year we had strengthened it's position,” he said.

“In 2012, the competition was attended by 136 athletes just 10 days after the incredible Olympic race in London, the first start of the new Olympic cycle.

“Earlier this month, we had a positive meeting with ITU president Marisol Casado, who as IOC member visited Moscow for the opening ceremony of the IAAF World Championships.

“I think Russia needs such big events as European Cups and World Triathlon Series races in triathlon, because this sport is becoming more and more popular in our country.

One week after Penza, the Russian Federation organise the popular triathlon event in Russia – ‘Moscow’s triathlon – Vesta bank 3 sport sprint’. This is the final leg of the National Cup 2013 and Mr Bystrov is expecting 600 athletes at this start.

This weekend kicks off with an ETU Junior Cup on Saturday 17th August, followed by the ITU European Cup on Sunday 18th August.

ITU EUROPEAN CUP PREVIEW

Ivana Kuriackova (SVK) is the only non Russian registered in the start list for the Elite women’s race, a significant move as the young athlete has had a brilliant 2013 so far with seven podiums, two Junior Cup wins and most recently she finished second in Ottawa at the World Duathlon Junior Championships.

The previous winners are all involved; Elena Danilova will defend the title she won in 2012 and Evgenia Sukhoruchenkova won the inaugural race in 2011. Alexandra Razarenova, Arina Shulgina and Irina Abysova would all be expected to feature prominently.

Elite Women ITU European Cup Start List

Alexander Bryukhankov won the first Men’s European Cup in 2011. After a superb 2012 he has struggled in the early part of 2013 but has recently found some improvement, finishing 6th in the final at Tiszaujvaros last week.

Vladimir Turbayevskiy is defending his title from 2012 but with Dmitry Polyanskiy (2nd in Palamos last month) and Ivan Vasiliev (European Champion) involved he will have his work cut out to make it back to back wins.

Elite Men ITU European Cup Start List

ETU EUROPEAN CUP PREVIEW

In the Junior race, Anastasia Gorbunova will be hoping for third time lucky. She has finished second in both races in Penza with a victory so far eluding her. Kristina Nesterenko (KAZ) recorded a superb 7th place in Istanbul two weeks ago and will be one to watch.

The aforementioned Kuriackova (SVK) is also registered on the Junior start list and will presumably decide today whether to race as an Elite or Junior.

In the Junior Men’s race, Ilya Prasolov is another who will be out to break his duck after recording two third place finishes in the previous races in Penza. Andrey Moiseenko (RUS) will also be out to go one better having been runner up last year.

However, a host of athletes from Latvia, Belarus and Armenia will compete in this race looking to deny the Russians success on home soil.

President of the Armenian Triathlon Federation, Hrachya Avetisyan, is delighted to see his young athletes on the start line.

He said: “We have two junior athletes and one elite athlete racing in Penza and this competition cannot come soon enough for us.

“Our athletes must participate in races to become stronger and more experienced.”
