Perth Commonwealth Games 1962
Leading Jamaican middle distance runner during the 1960’s George Kerr died on 15 June 2012 aged 74.
At the 1962 Perth British Empire and Commonwealth Games Kerr won the gold medal in the 440 yards and the silver behind Peter Snell in the 880 yards. At the 1960 Rome Olympic Games Kerr, in the 800m won by Snell, collected the bronze medal. He also won bronze with the Jamaican team in the 4 x 400m relay. In the 1964 Tokyo Olympic Games 800m, won by Snell, Kerr was fourth. He claimed another bronze medal at the 1966 Kingston Commonwealth Games in the 880 yards.
On his return to Jamaica after the 1962 Perth Games, Kerr stopped off in Auckland in December 1962 and competed at the Western Suburbs metric meeting at Grey Lynn Park and at an international meeting at Western Springs where he raced through the entire field in a handicap 880 yards leaving fellow scratch runner Gary Philpott well behind, winning in 1m 53.6s.
On 4 June Kerr had a heart attack and underwent heart surgery. He remained in intensive care until he succumbed to complications.
