Valerie Adams has become the first thrower in 32 years to win Track & Field News women’s athlete of the year award.

The authoritative American athletics publication has placed Adams number one after she claimed 17 of the 35 votes, heading off British heptathlete Jessica Ennis by 21 points and American sprinter Allyson Felix by 26. [Read more…]

Three-time London Olympic gold medalist Allyson Felix was given the IAAF’s top annual honor Friday when she was named the organization’s Athlete of the Year. Felix was honored at the Athletes of the Year Awards Ceremony in Barcelona, Spain, as U.S. athletes also picked up year-end awards  from Aries Merritt (Inspirational Award), the London Olympic women’s 4×100-meter relay team (Female Performer of the Year) and Robert Lida (Male Master of the Year) Friday. Half Marathon presented by Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and the Jimmy Fund. OTTAWA – Athletics Canada announced five additional nominees today to the 2012 Olympic Games team. Daundre Barnaby of Brampton, Ont., Aaron Brown of Toronto, Ont., Tremaine Harris of Markham, Ont., Kerri-Ann Mitchell of Pickering, Ont., and Sheila Reid of Newmarket, Ont., were nominated to the Canadian Olympic Committee for inclusion on the 2012 Olympic Games team.  This brings the total nominees to the Olympic Games team by Athletics Canada to 45, the largest in recent history.    [Read more…]
