{"id":22,"date":"2007-01-05T22:34:31","date_gmt":"2007-01-05T22:34:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.time-to-run.com\/kenya\/?p=22"},"modified":"2012-01-05T22:37:03","modified_gmt":"2012-01-05T22:37:03","slug":"mucheru-ban","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.time-to-run.com\/kenya\/news\/mucheru-ban.htm","title":{"rendered":"AK boss disowns athlete"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>By Chris Mbaisi and Robin Toskin &#8211; reproduced with permission from The Standard<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Athletics Kenya (AK) says it has nothing to do with  the Kenyan-born Bahraini athlete whose citizenship has been revoked by  his new country.<\/p>\n<p>AK chairman Isaiah Kiplagat said on Monday that  Mushir Salem Jawher, formerly Leonard Mucheru, will have to clear with  the Kenya Government before dealing with them.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The case at hand has nothing to do with us, we  finished with Jahwer after he defected. At the moment he is a foreigner  and will have to deal with the Government before we can think of  touching him,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>He said the matter rests with the Government, Bahrain and the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF).<\/p>\n<p>Kiplagat said if Jawher wants to run for Kenya again, he would have to wait for three years to be cleared as per the IAAF rules.<\/p>\n<p>&#8221; It is that serious and unfortunate for the young man,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>Kenyan immigration officials said Mucheru risks arrest, as the Constitution does not provide for dual citizenship.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There are no two ways about it. Technically he is  not a Kenyan now whether he informed the authorities here or not. He  risks arrest if found on Kenyan soil,&#8221; the official within the  Citizenship Department said.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The athlete was said to have received the news of loss of citizenship while at his parents\u2019 home in Tigoni, Kiambu, on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>The official said, reports that Mucheru travelled to  Israel using a Kenyan passport too, is a matter to be investigated since  anybody changing nationality is supposed to surrender the other  passport.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It is tricky, but the law will be followed to  interpret the athlete\u2019s situation. It is a strange thing though since  nothing of the sort had happened to a Kenyan athlete before,&#8221; the  official said. Jawher\u2019s citizenship was revoked on Saturday after he  took part in a marathon in Israel without permission from Bahrain  authorities.<\/p>\n<p>Bahrain Athletics Association deputy president,  Mohammed Abdul Jalal, confirmed Jawher was stripped of citizenship after  competing in Tiberius Marathon in Israel on Thursday last week.<\/p>\n<p>Jawher won the race with a time of 2:13:12, ahead of  other Kenyans Joseph Kirwa Kigen (2:13:14), Simon Bor (2:13:34) and  Benjamin Kipketer Bor (2:13:48).<\/p>\n<p>Most Arab countries including Bahrain have banned athletes from competing in sports activities in Israel.<\/p>\n<p>source <strong><span style=\"color: #000066;\">The Standard <\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Chris Mbaisi and Robin Toskin &#8211; reproduced with permission from The Standard Athletics Kenya (AK) says it has nothing to do with the Kenyan-born Bahraini athlete whose citizenship has been revoked by his new country.
