{"id":1064,"date":"2014-12-17T10:01:06","date_gmt":"2014-12-17T10:01:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.time-to-run.com\/nz\/?p=1064"},"modified":"2014-12-17T11:11:53","modified_gmt":"2014-12-17T11:11:53","slug":"international-turnout-for-queenstown-marathon","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.time-to-run.com\/nz\/news\/international-turnout-for-queenstown-marathon","title":{"rendered":"International turnout for Queenstown Marathon"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.time-to-run.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/queenstown-marathon.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1065\" title=\"queenstown marathon 2014\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.time-to-run.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/queenstown-marathon.jpg?resize=580%2C390\" alt=\"queenstown marathon 2014\" width=\"580\" height=\"390\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.time-to-run.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/queenstown-marathon.jpg?w=600&amp;ssl=1 600w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.time-to-run.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/queenstown-marathon.jpg?resize=300%2C201&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 580px) 100vw, 580px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Queenstown International Marathon drew a large international crowd of running enthusiasts when it made its debut.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the overcast November weather (22.11.14) the unique international event &#8211; set against the backdrop of the world renowned Crown and Remarkable mountain ranges &#8211; gave runners the chance to experience best highlights of the Queenstown Lakes region.<!--more--><\/p>\n<h3>Festival of running<\/h3>\n<p>Although there were plenty of runners from Australia, UK, Europe, Asia and the Americas taking part in the sell-out event, it was two New Zealanders (James Parsons and Victoria Beck) who etched their names in <a title=\"New Zealand in One\" href=\"http:\/\/www.globalbuzz.net\/nz\/\" target=\"_blank\">New Zealand<\/a> running history with benchmark setting victories.<\/p>\n<p>More than just a marathon, the festival of running gave participants a variety of racing options.\u00a0 A full marathon (42km) half marathon (21km) a 10km event and a 3km children\u2019s fun run ensured there were events for the whole family to enjoy.<br \/>\nMajestic mountain range<\/p>\n<p>With a start near the Millbrook Resort &#8211; world famous for its championship 27 hole <a title=\"Golf\" href=\"http:\/\/www.time-4-golf.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">golf course<\/a> and luxurious spa, the marathon continued through the historic gold mining area of Arrowtown and the Arrow River track blooming with wildflowers. Lake Hayes, framed by a majestic mountainous range offers a glimpse of the Australasian crested grebe (k\u0101mana) a species that belongs to an ancient order of diving water birds.<\/p>\n<p>Runners then travelled past the fast-flowing Shotover River, famous for its thrilling white-water rafting adventures and bungy-jumping. Captivating Lake Wakatipu, New Zealand\u2019s longest lake and a backdrop for multiple scenes in The Lord of The Rings and The Hobbit Trilogies and beautiful Queenstown gardens were also on the route.<br \/>\nHeart of Queenstown<\/p>\n<p>The race finished in the heart of Queenstown amid bars, restaurants and waiting crowds &#8211; offering a perfect ending to what is expected to become one of the most talked about marathons in the world.<\/p>\n<p>Parts of the Queenstown Bike Trail were also used during the marathon giving runners a unique perspective on the 110km-plus trail and its breath-taking vistas.<\/p>\n<p>Event CEO Dave Beeche was thrilled with the day.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis has just exceeded all of our expectations. We have hit year five targets in year one, such was the demand to be a part of what we know will become an iconic marathon event on the world calendar \u2013 New Zealand can be so proud of this stunning location.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cConditions early in the day were perfect for running if not for spectators and the feedback about the course is as we expected, people just loved running in this amazing part of the world on beautifully prepared off-road trails.\u201d<br \/>\n<strong>Background: Queenstown<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Queenstown &#8211; New Zealand&#8217;s \u2018Adventure Capital\u2019 &#8211; annually attracts more than a million visitors who come for everything from world-class skiing and snowboarding to bungy jumping, jet boating, and gourmet food and wines.<\/p>\n<p>Summer pursuits during long hot days on Queenstown\u2019s lake include fishing, hiking and relaxation. Autumn\u2019s crisp, clear days offer great golfing conditions, and the colourful contrast of falling leaves against a mountainous landscape. In winter, snow-covered mountains attract crowds of skiers and snowboarders to nearby ski-fields for an action-packed season that often lasts into spring.<\/p>\n<p>Adventure and indulgence go hand-in-hand in Queenstown.
