Thanks, Ed. I have definitely been under the weather - not quite sure what it is really, a sort of endless cold. Don't feel brilliant today but I am going to try to go for a SLOW run this afternoon unless I am not feeling great after lunch. I will let you know how I get on.

Ok. Good news is that I did go for a run. I was determined to run really slowly and stay mainly in zone 3. Bad news is that I didn't manage it. I am staggered at how hard it is run in zone 3. I started off, glad to be going and with some nice classic 60s songs helping me move along. It was a bit cold so I did not start ultra slowly but I was definitely not putting in any effort. I got to 1km and the app told me I was running at 6.18 (note figures are not quite the same as app gives me at end of run), which is 30 secs slower than usual so I thought it was OK but I did realise I needed to slow down a bit. So, I focused on not putting in any effort and was glad to see my pace dropping down to around 6.24. All good, I thought, and nice to be running without putting in any effort. After 3 or 4 kms, I could began to feel it a bit and the pace dropped a bit more but I tried to stay relaxed. When it got down to 6.29, however, and I knew I was nearly done I thought it was ok to put some effort in just for the last kilometer or two.

Anyway here are the metrics:

speed: 1K: 6.13. 2K: 6.35   3K: 6.23  4K: 6.30   5k: 6.31   6K:  6.30   7k: 6.15  8km (part) 6.03. Average: 6.25

heart rate: Moved above 146 bpm more or less from start of run and stayed between 150 and 165 for first 15 mins. then dropped below 146 for about ten minutes, hitting a low of 128 and then moved above 146 for the last ten minutes hitting a high of 170. Average: 154 bpm.

heart rate zones: 5mins in zone 3; 6 mins in zone 4; and 34 minutes in zone 5.

Maybe what I need to do is aim to run at 7 min ks and not worry if the speed drops as the run goes on? I wonder how long it will take me to get to a run that is mainly in zone 3!

Hi Paul, and welcome back Smile

don't look at pace for now, rather focus on 'time on feet' which is more zone 2 .. this is allow your body to absorb the training without impacting the immune system negatively

going into zone 4 and 5 is a no no for now

so currently run even if it feels slow, if it feels awful then stop for a minute so the pulse comes back down and then go again, break the run into little segments so that you can enjoy the running that you do do

try to enjoy

But I was enjoying it! I was thinking: "how nice it is to run without having to make any effort!". What will feel really awful is trying to run at walking pace. But I will do my best :-)

Ok. Still not been feeling great, but did manage yoga last thursday, tennis on Sat and dancing on Monday. And today I went for a run. I was determined to run really slowly and I managed that. In fact, I achieved a PW - 5.17 km in 42.15. I was pleased with my self-discipline and looked forward to discovering that I had mainly run in zone 3. But I was heading for disappointment. According to my Oura watch, I only ran for 34 mins and for all this period I was in zone 5 with an average heart rate of 152.

So I am left a bit confused. Maybe, the ring is not measuring my heart rate or zones correctly? Anyway, I will try again next week.

Interestingly, on Sat when I cycled to tennis, played tennis and then cycled home it gave me: 2 22 mins of activity: 43 mins n zone 1; 60 mins in zone 2; 26 mins in zone 3; 1 min in zone 4; and 0 in zone 5. Average heart rate 102 Most of the zone 3 was cycling there and then the first 20 mins of tennis, so maybe once my heart rate goes up it stays there unless I stop and stand around for a bit.

Hi Paul .. the hope is that you begin to recover from the ailments which seem to be impacting on you

without the technology, how are you feeling when you exercise, are you feeling sluggish or is there 'vibrancy' returning?

and I guess the weather can't be helping Wink

Hi Ed,

Getting back towards being my normal self, so managed to run today. Don't normally run on a Tuesday but my usual Tuesday volunteering activity at a local school didn't happen because term had finished. I decided to run without getting any updates on pace during the run. I would just run for fun and not worry about the pace. It was a bit cold (by English standards) so I did not run really slowly because I wanted to keep warm. Nonetheless no real effort for most of the time and then a bit of a push for the last km or so because I could feel I had plenty of spare energy (well, ok, some spare energy!).

I ran 5.18 km in 31.53 mins. Each km was faster than the previous one, starting at 6.18 and ending at 5.40. Heart rate rose quickly to around 160, although (surprisingly) it did drop back to around 125 after about five mins then it climbed back to around 160 for the rest of the run. Average HR: 161 max around 170.

I felt OK at the end of the run. Hope to manage one or two more runs before the end of the year.

Happy New Year, Ed! I didn't manage to do another run before the end of 2025 but I did one yesterday. I have now switched off the pace message I used to get at the end of each k, so I now just run and ignore pace, which is a new experience for me and quite nice, although I am always wondering about what pace I am doing. Anyway, it was icy which gave me an additional reason for going slowly (and I was probably also not in great shape after the festive period).

I did 6.29 k in 40.34 mins so average pace of 6.27 which made it my 124th faster run! Pace was fairly consistent - between 6.10 and 6.37. Heart rate hit 163 bpm more or less from the start and stayed there pretty consistently for the whole run. I hope to run again tomorrow (Sunday) although it may be icy again, although you may consider it warm weather (around 0).

I managed another run today. I did 4.54 kms in 27.33 so average pace was 6.04. I was running without updates on pace but it was very cold which kept me moving and was putting in a tiny bit more effort than on Friday. But still slightly slowed by need not to slip on ice patches! Pace varied from 5.53 in the middle to 6.24 at the end. Heart rate was a bit lower than Friday, so average 158 bpm, most of the time at 165 but a bit slower at the start and at the end. Zone 5 for 28 mins and zone 3 for 3 mins but could be after I stopped! My aim going forward is to try to run both Wed and Sun with more effort on Wed and something short and easier on Sun.

RE: Giving it a Go - TheEd - 20-01-2026

HI Paul .. how are things currently .. in your email you mentioned running on the weekend now, has that been easy to add without any problems?
