Felix to race Ohuruogu in Manchester - Newsroom - 28-04-2011
Three times World Championships 200 metres gold medalist Allyson Felix will clash with Olympic 400m champion Christine Ohuruogu next month in what could be the first of several encounters this summer.
The pair of world beaters are both returning to the spectacular Powerade ION4 Great Manchester CityGames track meeting, which will take place for the third successive year on Deansgate in Manchester's City Centre on May 15.
Their 200m straight track head-to ââ¬âhead clash is tipped to be a major highlight in the 13 event programme which is bursting with world class international and domestic talent who will be chasing success at the innovative street event.
Felix is itching to retain her title where, last year, she posted a world best performance for 200m on a straight track with an impressive time of 22.55 seconds - and could go even quicker this time.
"I love this concept of street athletics where the spectators are virtually rubbing shoulders with you and make it so exciting," Felix said.
"I'm delighted to be returning and hoping to score another win."
"It's a dream match-up, particularly so early in the season, although the other events will be equally strong." Andy Caine the elite athleteââ¬â¢s manager said.
Caine pointed to the presence of Jessica Ennis, the reigning World and European heptathlon title holder and Britain's current golden girl, who defends her 150m crown and will also race in the 100m hurdles against Tiffany Ofili.
Last month Ofili won the European Indoor 60m hurdles silver medal in Paris, where the former USA athlete deprived Ennis of her British record which will add fuel to their encounter.
Ennis, in the 150m which she won last year in a career best 16.99sec, will test her flat sprint skills against three of the UK's top sprinters - Commonwealth 100m and 200m silver medalistââ¬â¢s Katharine Endacott and Abi Oyepitan, plus Laura Turner, the country's top 100m performer last summer.
