Jordaan in shot put final - TheEd - 10-07-2012

Tuesday, 10 July 2012 - Lezaan Jordaan will line up in the women’s shot put final tonight at 20:20 after a personal best of 15.27m in the second round. Jordaan’s previous best was 14.90m at the SA Open Championships in Pretoria on 4 May. The automatic qualifying distance was 15.70m with four athletes in the group surpassing the distance.

Monique Stander and Thato Makhafola competed in the first round of the women’s 800m with the first three athletes in every heat automatically qualifying for the semi-final. Monique Stander finished third in her heat (2:07.08) behind Halimah Nakaayi (UGA) and Julia Zrinyi (CAN). Nakaayi and Zrinyi finished in 2:06.38 and 2:06.64 respectively. Makhafola unfortunately did not proceed to the next round after a fall. She finished 7th in 2:16.82

Siphelo Ngqabaza and Fana Mofokeng both qualified for the semi-final of the men’s 100m. Ngqabaza competed in the first heat, with the first two athletes automatically qualifying, and finished second with Giovanni Galbieri (ITA). Both athletes clocked 10.60sec with Teray Smith (BAH) winning the heat in 10.58sec. Mofokeng qualified with a fast time after finishing third in his heat in 10.59sec.

18 year-old Western Province athlete Angus Julies competed in the men’s 110m hurdles. Julies failed to proceed to the next round after finishing 7th in 14.41sec. The winning time in the heat was 13.74sec by Dondre Echols (USA).
