Van Zyl and Fredericks bow out of 400m hurdles - TheEd - 03-08-2012

Friday, 3 August 2012 - LJ van Zyl and Cornel Fredericks both failed to qualify for the semi-finals of the men’s 400m hurdles on the first day of the athletics at the Olympic Games.

Cornel Fredericks ran in the third heat, finishing eighth after a hamstring injury. He, however, decided to finish the race and clocked 52.29sec. The heat was won by David Greene (GBR) in 48.98sec. LJ van Zyl finished sixth in his heat, crossing the line in 50.31sec. The heat was won by reigning Olympic champion, Angelo Taylor, in 49.29sec.

More Olympic athletics action this weekend

Apart from Khotso Mokoena competing in the qualifying round of the men’s long jump tonight, other action this weekend includes Oscar Pistorius in the men’s 400m. Mokoena will have a chance of competing in the men’s long jump final on Saturday at 20:55, should he get through in tonight’s qualifying rounds.

Pistorius will make his Olympic debut and history, as the first athlete to compete in both the Paralympic and Olympic Games. He will line up in the first heat of the men’s 400m on Saturday morning at 11:35. He recorded 45.20sec in Pretoria at the Gauteng North Championships on 17 March, but could not get close to the time again later in the season. His best was 45.52sec at the Africa Senior Championships in Benin, where he won the silver medal. The 18 year-old, Luguelin Santos (DOM), has the fastest time in the heat, 44.45sec, clocked in Hengelo, Netherlands on 27 May but most of the other athletes in this heat have also run faster times than Pistorius this season. Should Pistorius make it past the heats in the men’s 400m, he will line up in the semi-final on Sunday at 21:40.
