Two named to 2010 Canadian World Junior Championships Team - TheEd - 14-06-2010

OTTAWA – Athletics Canada has added the first two names to the roster of the 2010 Canadian World Junior Championships team which will compete in Moncton, New Brunswick at the International Association of Athletics Federation World Junior Championships from July 19-25. Rachael McIntosh of Bridgewater, Nova Scotia and Branden Wilhelm of Woodstock, Ontario both qualified for the team yesterday by winning the Combined Events Trials held in Toronto.

McIntosh finished first in the heptathlon scoring 4938 points to secure her spot on the team while Wilhelm took the decathlon with 6658 points. The roster for the team will be finalized as the Canadian World Junior Trials unfold in Moncton July 2 to 4; the winners of each event will earn an automatic berth to Canada’s 2010 World Junior Championship team.

Athletics Canada expects to field a team of approximately 60 athletes including 4 relay teams at the 2010 World Juniors. The association performance objectives include selecting the most competitive athletes born in 1991, 1992, and 1993 who are prepared to achieve seasonal best performances at the championships and to provide a positive international competitive experience for first year and returning national team athletes. The overriding objective is to prepare athletes for future success within Athletics Canada’s High Performance program.

Canada is hosting the 2010 World Junior Championships focused on a long term sport development legacy through infrastructure development, community endowment and community capacity with the objective of elite development in the Atlantic region ensuring the longevity of athletics.
