Entries close for Om Die Dam 2011 - TheEd - 03-03-2011 Entries for one of the country’s biggest road running ultra events, the Old Mutual Om Die Dam Marathon, close this weekend on Sunday 6 March and no late entries will be taken after this date. The event takes place in the North West Province on Saturday 19 March, starting and finishing at the Hartbeespoort High School in Schoemansville. This popular event offers runners the flagship 50km ultra, the traditional 21km, the 10km run/walk, which was introduced last year to celebrate the event’s twentieth birthday, and the Dave Muller 5km fun run/walk. No postal entries will be taken and they can enter either online at entrytime.com or at leading sports outlets in Johannesburg and Pretoria, including Runaway Sports and Running Inn in Pretoria, The Sweat Shop and Sportsman’s Warehouse. Entry forms are also available from the race office in Hartbeespoort. Participants will still be able to enter the 21km, 10km and 5km fun run at registration and on race day. Runners must collect their race numbers at registration at the Hartbeespoort High School on Friday 18 March or on race day. They are invited to bring their family and friends to registration as there will be a race expo with entertainment, food stalls and a beer garden, plus a Kids-Zone for the children. Local band Denim will be performing at the finish from 12h30 onwards. The ultra, which starts at 06h00, takes runners around the Hartbeespoort Dam in Madibeng. Walkers are welcome to take part and are eligible for prize money but they must be able to complete the ultra event within the seven hour cut off. The 21km starts at 06h05 and walkers are encouraged to enter this event where a cut off time of four hours applies. Those who do not finish the 21km within the cut off time can finish at their leisure but will not receive an official finishing time. The 10km and 5km fun run both start at 06h20. According to race director Hannes Barendze, “A cause close to our hearts is the rehabilitation of the Hartbeespoort dam. With the water rapidly declining, this spectacular venue for our event is in danger of disappearing.” Old Mutual and the race committee have engaged an existing charity that is cleaning and rehabilitating the dam and its surrounds. They identified “Metsi A Me Water Remediation Project” to collaborate with in cleaning the dam. “To celebrate the event’s 21st anniversary, we will donate R21 000 to this project, a R1 000.00 for every year we’ve been involved. The event will also be raising funds for the great work the rehabilitation project is doing, which will go a long way in ensuring that we’ll be running this race for many years to come,” said Joy Khaole, marketing executive for Old Mutual SA.
