Former world marathon record holder Paul Tergat will not run in the London Marathon on 13 April as the Kenyan does not believe he is fit enough.

The 39-year-old has only just resumed serious training after completing a four-month military course.

And he said: "Right now, I am at 40% of my usual fitness and the London Marathon is rather close. My focus will be on the Beijing Olympics."

His military training was at the time of the recent Kenyan political turmoil.

It followed December's presidential elections and Tergat added: "We really need peace in our country and one of the things we must preserve at all cost is our sporting culture."
