Sinusitis is an inflammation of the paranasal sinuses. Sinusitis can stem from an upper respiratory infection caused by a variety of bacteria.
As a result, nasal mucous membranes swell and block the ostium of the paranasal sinus. A painful pressure occurs from an accumulation of mucous producing pain, headaches and migraines as a result are not uncommon.
Symptoms and signs
The skin area over the sinus may be swollen and painful to the touch. A headache and malaise may be present. A purulent nasal discharge may also occur.
Control and treatment:
Where there is a purulent infection antibiotics may be necessary. Steam inhalation and other nasal topical vasoconstrictors, such as phenylephrine may 0.25% spray, can assist in the vasoconstriction and drainage.
