Thailand – Japanese athletes dominated the inaugural Phukethon, the first annual running festival on the Thai holiday island of Phuket. Clubmates, Hiroki Kai and Azusa Nojiri won their respective marathons with Nojiri finishing sixth overall; while Kansuke Morihashi won the men’s half-marathon, with Thai Olympian in Rio last year, Natthaya Thanaronnwat winning the women’s ‘half’. The Standard Chartered Dubai Marathon has impressively confirmed its position as one of the fastest races in the world. Winning times of 2:05:28 from Lemi Berhanu and 2:20:02 by fellow-Ethiopian Aselefech Mergia are both world-class. While hopes for course bests did not quite materialise other records on this superflat course in Dubai were broken on Friday. Running his debut Ethiopia’s Lelisa Desisa won the 14th Standard Chartered Dubai Marathon with a world-class time of 2:04:45. In a tight finish, five men broke 2:05 for the first time in marathon history. All five were still in contention for victory and the 200,000 US Dollar first prize with one kilometre to go. Sarah Biss cut five minutes off her personal best in finishing 17th in the Rotterdam Marathon in 2h 39m 20s. Biss went through the half way mark in 1h 16m 21s. She faced tough windy conditions over the second half.
Tiki Gelana of Ethiopia won in the fourth fastest all time for a woman of 2h 18m 58s.
Biss’ previous best was 2h 44m 32s for 16th place in last October’s Chicago Marathon. [Read more…]
