March 8, 2012: As Cork City Marathon launches the first ever Inter-Services competition, race organisers are challenging uniformed service personnel in Ireland and abroad to see who will come out as 2012 Cork City Marathon Inter-Services Champions. From Airport Fire and Police, the Defence Forces and Registered Nurses to an Garda Síochána and the Prison Service, all will be in to win! The Championships will be part of this year’s full marathon and team relay races.

Heading into its sixth year, the 2012 Cork City Marathon takes place on Monday, June 4 and is long-established as ‘the marathon for everyone’. Speaking at the launch of the Inter Services Championships, Lord Mayor of Cork Cllr Terry Shannon said: “Each year the marathon grows in strength and this year is no different. In fact, it will be even more exciting with the new Inter-Services competition. I am looking forward to see which Service are crowned the champions.” The Lord Mayor’s trophies will be presented to the winning individuals and teams.

Cork City Marathon Race Director Jim O’Donovan, said: “The relay is one of the most popular events in the Cork City Marathon, which is why we wanted to add something special to this year’s competition. I firmly believe that the Inter-Services competition will add an even bigger buzz on race day in Cork.”
