Chebii wins 10km in Prague

Daniel Chebii outsprints Kinde Atanaw

The 18th edition of the O2 Prague Grand Prix kicked off at 6:00 p.m. this evening with the adidas Women’s Race 5 km.  1200 women entered this popular run on a warm (23 C.) evening in the historic city.  

This was followed by the METRO 10K Race at 7:30 p.m. featuring an elite international field of men and women competing for the prestige of a victory in a race that has featured many great names in its’ history.  A total of 5,300 runners toed the start ready to compete for 10,000 euros in open division prize money plus time and record bonuses, and additional prize monies for the Czech athletes.

The men’s 10 Km was led by Daniel Chebii of Kenya with a fine time of 27:35 just one second off the race record set by Philemon Limo of Kenya in 2011.  Kinde Atanaw of Ethiopia was just out sprinted by Chebii and crossed the line in second with 27:36.  Julius Lomerinyang of Kenya completed the top three with a very credible time of 27: 42.
The women’s race also featured three athletes going toe to toe until the very end with Josephine Chepkoech of Kenya defeating the pre-race favorite Emily Chebet by one second in a personal best time of 32:00 to Chebet’s 32:01.  Gemma Steel of Great Britain completed the podium with 32:08.

The leading Czech runners were Jan Kreisinger in 15th overall with 30:16, and, for the women, 18 year old Anezka Drahotova who set a personal best by over one and a half minutes with 33.59 in 17th place.

Next Sunday, on September 15 there will be another running event – Mattoni Ústí and Labem Half Marathon.
