Rosa Flanagan

Bauhaus Junioren-Gala, MTG Stadium Mannheim – 29/30 June 2013

Eight personal bests were recorded by New Zealand athletes competing on day one at the world famous international junior meeting.

On the track, reminiscent to the previous Mt Smart Stadium track, personal best times were posted by Rosa Flanagan 4m 27.19s for fifth in the 1500m, Kara Macdermid 4m 31.24s sixth and Audrey Gregan 4m 37.88s eighth. Zoe Hobbs clocked 12.16s (+0.5) in the heats of the 100m and James Sandilands also had a best 100m of 11.33s (-0.2) in the heats. Others on the track were Abby Goldie 100m heats 12.68s (+0.1) and Shannon Gearey 400m in 56.97s.

Ben Chong Wong, Matthew Bloxham and Sam Ulufonua also produced personal bests in the field events. They were competing with athletes two years older and had luck with the weather which was cold and rainy in the morning, improving in the afternoon for excellent throwing conditions.

Shot put 6kg: 8-CHONG WONG Benedict 16.91m PB …11-BLOXHAM Matthew 16.51m PB Ben achieved a huge 80cm PB in the second round to finish in the top eight, but he had to stop the competition after four rounds because a pain in the shoulder. After warming up at 17m Bloxham got his PB in the first round at 16.51m but fouled attempts two and three before leaving the competition to go to the hammer.

Hammer 6kg: 4-BLOXHAM Matthew 66.60m. Without a real warm and coming in a hurry from the shot put Matthew started cautiously with a 63.99m throw, he then went for the big one. He got a 66.60m season’s best without really finishing his delivery. In the fifth and the last round, he got a real great throw which went closer to the 70m line, but unfortunately they were out of the sector. It would have been probably been a 68m plus throw and a new NZL junior record. Bloxham knows that he is able to get to this distance again.

Discus 1.75kg: Sam ULUFONUA was the only New Zealander competing with Charlie GAMBLE wanting to focus only on the youth 1.5kg implement. Ulufonua did well in the best competition he had ever been in and scored two successive PBs with the junior implement with 51.68m and then 52.23m to finish 12th in the final.

Eliza McCartney was seventh in the pole vault clearing 4.00m.

On the second day Zoe Hobbs recorded 25.19s (-1.0) over 200m and Abby Goldie 26.15s. Tarryn Davy was 11th in the 800m in 2m 11.64s and Kara Macdermid 12th in 2m 15.27s. James Sandilands cleared 1.90m in the high
