Azerbaijan development plan

Hayle Ibragimov - Azerbaijan

European Athletics and the Azerbaijan Athletics Federation are pleased to announce the creation of a long-term strategic plan for athletics in the country.

The plan includes the hosting in Baku of the European Youth Olympic Trials in June 2014 and the European Athletics Convention in October 2014.

In line with respecting the wishes of the Azerbaijan Athletics Federation to have their athletes participating during the European Games in Baku, the European Athletics Council has made a proposal to the European Olympic Committees to integrate the European Athletics Team Championships 3rd League into the European Games in June 2015.

Other activities will also be added as part of the overall strategy to strengthen athletics in Azerbaijan: European Athletics has agreed with the National Federation for them to organise a showcase event to promote athletics in the city centre of Baku in June 2015.

European Athletics President Hansjörg Wirz said, “The Azerbaijan Athletics Federation and its President Chingiz Husseinzade have been very proactive in working with us to develop a long-term plan for athletics in the country and we believe that together we have found the right path as we move forward.

“We are now ready to work alongside the Azerbaijan Athletics Federation and with the relevant authorities to finalise the details of the events that are part of this strategy, taking into account our responsibility and duty to govern our sport on the continent.”
