This event was first run in May 1981 with 200 participants, the winner was John Graham (UK) with a time of 2Hr 09min 28sec. Since then the event has developed into the largest one-day sporting event in The Netherlands. Rotterdam owes its strong and unique position in the marathon world to the fact that the Marathon Rotterdam is a quality event. Its primary aim is to organize an internationally attractive marathon of high quality. There is an annual Sports Expo which adds greater appeal to the event for both spectator and runner.
