Athletes qualify on Day 1

BARCELONA – Nine Canadian athletes made their mark in Barcelona, Spain on day one of the World Junior Track and Field Championships qualifying into later rounds.

Devan Wiebe of Vancouver, B.C., won heat 4 of the first round of the 800-metres in 2:07.04; Julia Zrinyi of Winnipeg, Man., was second in heat 2 in 2:06.64.  Both girls automatically qualified for the semi finals.

In the boy’s 100-metres Mobolade Ajomale of Richmond Hill, Ont., and Devon Rittinger of Kitchener, Ont., automatically advanced to the semi finals placing second (10.68) and third (10.62) in their respective heats.  In the girl’s 100-metres Khamica Bingham of Toronto, Ont., and Clémence Paiement of Laval, Que., also advanced to the semi finals in 11.57 and 11.88 seconds respectively.

Toronto Ont.’s Shawnacy Barber cleared 5.15-metres and advanced to the final in the boy’s pole vault. Jordan Young of Windsor, Ont., advanced to the final in the boy’s discus with a toss of 59.54-metres.  Both finals are slated for Thursday afternoon.

Advancing in the boy’s sprint hurdles is Clavin Arsenault of Kitchener, Ont., who finished third in his heat (heat 5) in 13.82 seconds. In the same event Gabriel Slythe-Léveillé of Blainville, Que., stopped the clock at 14.40 seconds but did not advance.

After the first day of the decathlon James Turner of Kelowna, B.C., sits in 20th place with 3709 points. The second and final day of the decathlon goes tomorrow with the 110-metre hurdles, discus, pole vault, javelin and 1500-metres.
