SA Champions in Age Categories

Dawid Visser

Following an agreement with SAMA (SA Masters Association) we can now confirm that SA trail champions will also be crowned in various age categories for 2014.  This will be done at both the SA Ultra Trail Champs on March 8, as well as the SA long distance champs on June 14.

SA Champions in Age Categories have new opportunities

SAMA is a member of the World Masters Athletics (WMA) that regulates all running for men & women over 35 years of age.  As such the age category winners at our championships will receive the official national medals for their performances.

At this stage only the age categories of 40-49  and  50+ will be in effect but if the numbers and interest justify more categories to be included, it will be considered.

Please note that since the senior title of SA champion is an open category (not age related), it is possible for runners doing well enough in the age category, to also do well in the senior category.  For instance, the winner of an age category can also win the senior title.

World Masters Championship

Please note that at the moment there are no World Masters Championships available in trail running in these distances and as such no national teams will be chosen.  The only exception is the World Masters Mountain Running Championships, which is a discipline that we don’t yet have in South Africa.
