2012 Key Competition Dates

London Olympics 2012

London Olympics 2012

The Athletics Australia Board has released the dates for the 2012 IAAF World Challenge, 2012 Olympic Selection Trials and 2012 Open and AWD Championships.

The Melbourne IAAF World Challenge has been confirmed on 3 March 2012 at the new Victorian Athletics Centre (Albert Park). Additionally the London Selection Trials will be held in conjunction with the IAAF Challenge over the period 2-4 March 2012.

The first weekend of March timing of this meet accommodates the High Performance athletes who will be seeking to represent Australia to the best of their abilities at the London Olympic Games in August. All 2012 Australian Athletics Tour Meets will be staged before 3 March, with specific dates and venues to be released at a later date in May.

The 90th Australian Open and AWD Athletics Championships will be held at the end of the season as usual on 13-15 April 2012 also at the new Victorian Athletics Centre.

This will allow the 700+ athletes who compete in the Nationals each year to undertake a normal season including Club competition and State Championships.

Athletics Australia have gained strong support from the Victorian Government to hold the Selection Trials and Open National  Championships at the new state of the art facility in Albert Park in 2012.

The Athletics Australia Board has deliberated and spent a great deal of due diligence in coming to this decision to split the Selection Trials and the Nationals. We feel it provides the best of both worlds for all athletes involved. The Olympic and Paralympic Games are Athletics Australia’s priorities in the quadrennial but we cannot forget the grass roots of our sport, including Club, State, National and Junior athletes who are the future of our sport.

The London Olympics Selection Policy will be amended to take into account these changed circumstances.
