Maintaining Motivation

Maintaining Motivation

Maintaining motivation

In order to sustain motivation once you have set yourself a goal you need to maintain it. Initially you might be enthusiastic, but as the daily slog on the road to achieving it wears off and other external factors such as bad weather, sick children, overload of work and family duties etc. gets in the way, your motivation could wear off fast. What you need to do is to constantly remind yourself of your goal, so that it is real and it cannot efface itself and you cannot cower away from it. For example for big races that I have prepared for I have pasted up profiles of the course, and or pictures that I find motivating. These may not necessarily be running-related pictures but pictures of either of people whom I admire some other image that is meaningful or inspirational to me. [Read more…]

Tokyo on a Trot Part II by Cassandra Davis

I once again had the pleasure of visiting Tokyo on a business trip. I’m always glad that running as an exercise is so transportable, you can do it just anywhere (even the Tokyo on the Trotbusy metropolis of Tokyo), all you need is to pack your trainers. This time I was cursing a bit as my winter running gear was taking up more room in my bag than I would have liked, so that I had to favour them over an extra pair of shoes and casuals.

My second visit to the city lost in translation. This time I was feeling more confident from my positive running experiences there, however, when the friendly airport limousine bus dropped me off at my first hotel which was situated on a busy highway crowded with skyscrapers on both sides, I suddenly had my doubts on whether I would be using the gear that had been allocated so much prize space in my bag. The following morning, jet lag preventing me from sleeping beyond 4am, I got up and studied my English map of the immediate vicinity. [Read more…]

However, we have a host of problems to deal with from sanitary wear to holding everything in from sweat to urine. Cassandra Davis has experienced and lists some solutions to a bunch of problems you won’t find answers to in any of the running books. [Read more…]

Motivation - Mind Power

Motivation – Mind Power

I am often asked how I keep motivated to run every day. For me this seems strange because I love running. People have been known to excel in activities, which give them little pleasure, but of course you are more likely to succeed in doing things that reward you with physical stimulation and psychological satisfaction. Little Miss Marathon

Zhang Huimin

Zhang Huimin

The French l’Equipe magazine of 15 December 2006 ran an alarming article about a 7-year Chinese girl whose father coaches her and makes her run 4 hours each morning before school. The nymph like Zhang Huimin whose marathon record is 4 hours18minutes and 33 seconds rises at 2:30 am daily to begin her rigid marathon training imposed by her father which finishes at the school gates at 7:10am. Her case was apparently alerted by to the local press, by the father of a school mate, which ran an apparently heroic article on this little girl. It was then taken up by national tv and denounced as a case of child abuse. [Read more…]
