Assisted by a strong tail wind, sprinters were able to post some impressive times at the Auckland track and field championships over the weekend.
The senior men’s 100m final produced a close finish with Joseph Millar of Tauranga finding an extra gear in the final 20 metres to pip Isaac Tatoa in 10.30s (+4.5). Tatoa recorded 10.36s with these two shutting out national champion Carl Van der Speck who was third in 10.39s.

Millar, who had a previous best of 10.68s, was totally surprised both in winning and the time that he ran.
“I’m very happy to run as fast as I did, it is a huge surprise that I was even capable of going that quick,” he said.
“It is a relief after 18 months of injuries that I can beat such a top field a month out from the national championships,” he added.

McLaren, who is now based in Auckland under his coach Chris Pilone, said that it was good to be racing again.
“I’ve been out with an Achilles injury for about three months, and have just got in a good month with no issues now. I needed a hit out, needed to learn how to race again, so I thought come down here and give it a go,” said McLaren. At this stage he hopes to compete in the 1500m at the New Zealand championships.

WELLINGTON
St Pat’s Silverstream International Mile Race – 24 February 2012
Beijing Olympic 1500m silver medallist Nick Willis battled a strong southerly wind to convincingly win an exhibition mile, run on a grass track, at St Patrick’s College Silverstream on Saturday. Considering the conditions he ran a creditable 4m 2.7s. National 1500m champion Hamish Carson was second in 4m 5.0s with Willis’ training companion Will Lee of America third in 4m 7.7s.
Willis said it was extremely tough conditions, but with the backing of a crowd of 1000 who circled the track it was really fun.
“Realistically breaking four minutes was not on, and I am surprised that we ran as fast as we did. We hit a huge wall of wind on each lap but with the crowd screaming for me and Hamish we kept rolling it out,” he said.
“I had to finish hard and not let the local guy (Hamish) beat me,” he added.
Willis will next race over 1500m in Melbourne on Saturday.
