Rebecca Wardell’s quest to compete in the heptathlon at the London Olympics has been defeated by an injured hamstring. Wardell was to have a last-ditch effort in qualifying at the French combined events championships over the weekend, but after a fitness test she ruled herself out after only being able to run at 90 per cent and was unable to hurdle.
