Brent Newdick - Long Jump

Brent Newdick won the decathlon with a total of 8057, seven points better than the performance standard set for the London Olympic Games. Newdick set personal bests in two of the ten events, 7.56m in the long jump and 48.25m in the discus throw. The 27 year old has a best score of 8114 points set in Austria in May last year.

His performances in Melbourne were: 100m 11.02s (-0.7) 856, long jump 7.56m (+1.6) 950, shot put 14.48m 758, high jump 1.95m 758, 400m 49.22s 851, 110m hurdles 14.55s (0.0) 905, discus throw 48.25m 834, pole vault 4.70m 819, javelin throw 56.43m 684, 1500m 4m 46.21s 642, total 8057.

National champion Nicholas Gerrard also took part in the decathlon finishing ninth with 6234 points. Unfortunately he did not clear a height in the pole vault.

New Zealand sprint champion Joseph Millar of Tauranga flashed into third in the 100m in 10.49s after earlier recording 10.42s in the heats.

On the last day of the championships Millar was triumphant in the 200m winning in 21.27s after earlier qualifying in the heats in 21.20s. Tama Toki was third in the 200m final in 21.43s. In the heats he recorded 21.24s.

Other third placings went to Cameron French of Hamilton in the 400m hurdles in 52.66s, Nneka Okpala of Auckland with 12.97m in the triple jump, Camille Buscomb 1500m in 4m 22.98s and Kristie Baillie 400m in 53.26s. In the heats of the 400m hurdles Phil Simms of Pirongia recorded a world junior championships B qualifying time of 52.71s.

Day 2 14 April: Women 100m semi: Monique Williams 5 11.75s (+0.6) Q, Rochelle Coster 10 11.98s (+1.4), Fiona Morrison 18 12.18s (+0.6). Triple jump: Nneka Okpala 3 12.97m (+0.6). Shot put secured: Jessica Hamill 3 6.89m.
